This tip I got from my midwife four years ago, and it's been a real time-saver for us. Carpet your garden. "What?" I hear you say. Yes! Get strips of carpeting (obviously, it doesn't matter if it matches your decor) and put them down in rows in between your plants. Not only does this virtually eliminate weeding, it also saves on watering costs, as the carpet keeps the ground moist longer. You still have to weed a bit around the plants, but once the plants have grown they can take care of themselves, and they usually elbow out any weeds that might try to pop up.
Another side benefit I'm finding is that it helps the kids see definable boundaries. To them, a plant is a plant, and there's no difference between green beans and grass. However, I can tell them, "Stay on the carpet", and I don't have to worry about them trampling my precious vegetables!
After all, who doesn't want wall-to-wall carpeting?

What a COOL idea?! If I had a garden, I would try that....I'll be lucky if I get a tomato plant to grow this year! :) I am sooo bad with plants.

Very intriguing. Where did you come across the carpet scraps? -Andy's work? I think it's a very neat idea... have to see if I can gather enough carpet to try it out. -Thanks for sharing!
Very impressive garden... Good tip!
What a great idea.
I can't tell from your picture -- does the carpet go shaggy-side up? And how long does it hold up for?
We've got a ton of old carpet in the barn that I could try this with.
