Fairly Fun with Auntie Erna

Ever since we moved here six winters ago, I've been trying to get my family from the Sunny South to come up and visit during Fair Week. Midwest fairs are something not to be missed, and are very different from the Southern farce of a fair.

Well, I was so pleasantly surprised to get a call from my aunt who decided on a whim to come up and spend a few days with us during Fair Week.
(I think that telling her in luscious detail about the Cream Puffs and Fried Cheese Curds might have had something to do with it.)

Seriously, if you've never had Fried Cheese Curds at a county fair, your life is in a sad state. Tut tut.
Our county and the surrounding counties have large 4-H programs and a lot of agricultural stuff, so there are always lots and lots of interesting animals to see.

The Poultry house is always worth a visit.

Take these poor birds, for instance. They make me feel much better about my own hairdo. At least I'm not put on display for people to mock. (People can do that behind my back if they feel like it, but at least I'm not behind bars while they do it.)
There are always a lot of adorable rabbits, too. My favorite are the Flemish Giants, but for some reason there weren't any of those at the fair this year. There were a lot of tiny baby rabbits though!
Although there are shows to see at the grandstand, my kids don't really care for horse/tractor pulls, or country music stars, so we just go to whatever entertainment is provided for free. Frankly, the free entertainment is much more fun anyway!

This year, there was some sort of Wild Animal group that came, and they had lots of crazy animals to display.
Peter was enthralled from start to finish.
Finally, of course, one of the great things about fairs are the rides. I'm old and crochety, so rides aren't that fun for me personally, but I get a lot of enjoyment out of watching my Peter and Miss Boo!
Miss Boo seemed to find it her personal duty to ensure that the boats on the boat ride "didn't go too fast or go off the twack".
The ferris wheel was a first for all of us, and we enjoyed it so much we went back for a second ride.

Our county fair can be hectic at times, but is always a lot of fun!
Trust me.
