A Happy Mistake

Sometimes I order food from a local co-op, which usually comes in bulk and is much cheaper than regular store prices, along with being a little better quality.

One of the things I ordered the last time was Oat Groats, thinking they were just a different sort of oatmeal. Instead of the nice flat little flakes of oatmeal that I was used to, however, I got a bag of oval shaped seed things. Huh.

Not sure what to do with these odd looking little inedibles, I googled. How did anyone ever survive before google? Seriously?

My extensive google search revealed to me the wonderful and heretofore unknown by me fact that oat groats can be cooked very similarly to regular oatmeal, except for one major difference -

oat groats taste WONDERFUL!!!
Oatmeal, at best, has a very mushy consistency and a rather bland flavor. I don't mind it, but it's definitely not in the top ten of yumminess.

Oat groats, however, have a lovely silky texture without that mushy consistency. The grouts are chewy but soft in a way that reminds me of tapioca pudding (minus the slime).

Sprinkle on a little brown sugar, a splash of milk, and garnish with some mixed berries, and you've got a fabulous meal!
