Trekking South

We live in the Frigid North, and it's become a bit of a tradition to migrate to the Sunny South for several weeks over the Christmas Holidays. We had planned to leave the house by noon, but in true family fashion, we squeaked out of the house at a brisk 2:00.

Hey look, snow! What a surprise!
Hey look, corn! What a surprise!
(Good riddance. I don't intend to see either for quite awhile.)

Handyman did most of the driving, although I tried to do my part. I have this annoying little habit of getting sleepy as soon as I get behind the wheel unless I have something to distract me. It's something to do with the monotony and repetition of flashing yellow lines on the road that make me go into a trance. What can I say, I'm easily bored!

The kids were very good for the entire trip, and other than a brief spell of vomiting by Baby Gabe, things went great. They slept for about three hours during nap time, watched a movie twice, and then slept through the night while we drove.
While Handyman drove I was able to get a lot of knitting done (of course. What else would I be doing?)
I whipped up a pair of fingerless mitts for my brother Josh's girlfriend. I hope she likes them!

I know they look a bit like the Fetching Mitts from Knitty, but they're not. I used a pattern (Four Rib Braid Cable) from Sereknitty, and just modified the cables for the palm section.
I love the way she has the thumb gusset shaped. I've never done a mitten this way before, and I think it makes for a great fit, and so easy!

And finally, another gratuitous shot to show off the knitting and nails. Have to show the nails!

I keep listening to the news speak about getting free online grant applications so I have been looking around for the best site to get one.
